Biography, beginning with a genealogy, sourced from personal manuscripts with details of life on Bass Rock during its time as a prison. The appendix on Bass Rock includes a list of those imprisoned there. Blackader was expelled from his parish for refusing to accept the episcopacy. Before his imprisonment he became an itinerant preacher, and there are many references to Blackader and his co-covenanters preaching in Fife (Chapter V), often attracting large congregations attended by the militia to maintain order. Of note are conventicles held near Balcarres House, at Kinkell near St Andrews., where it is recorded that the militia had joined the worshippers, and at Hill of Beath near Dunfermline. The quotes from personal memoirs including those of Blackader's son(''An account of Mr. Blackader's sufferings'') are written in a ''user friendly'' narrative style.
