Labanoff''s preface gives the background to his collection including the history and probable(or not) authenticity of portraits of Mary. He lists items in his collection and those he would like to acquire. There follows a resume of Mary's life taken from his previous publication (1844) of Mary's letters before the actual notes. The list itself is in eight sections: paintings and drawings; works done while she lived in France; works originally done in Scotland; portraits painted during her captivity in England; portraits of unknown , dubious or false origin ;portraits of members of her family and descendants; medals and coins minted during her reign; various other items, engravings and lithographs.
