The Young Governess (to run away is to run a risk): this novel is set in Paris and centres around the life of a young girl who, after being disappointed in love, becomes a governess in order to avoid joining a convent. Claudine de Soligny (Aide-toi, Dieu t'aidera): the eponymous heroine of this novel is the orphan daughter of a French nobleman who married beneath himself. She is taken to Italy to be brought up by her paternal aunt. The plot follows her up to young adulthood.
