This article describes three public libraries in United Kingdom: Croydon, Dunfermline and York. The different levels of technology in these libraries is described and the steps that are being taken to move to the 21st century. The research was conducted over two years and is not intended to compare the libraries in question but to illustrate how the varying levels of automation affect patron resources and services.
