James R Angell's lecture entitled Popular and Unpopular Science was delivered on 4 December 1934, with H A Spoehr's The Nature of Progess in Science being given the following week. The speeches were then published herein in 1935. There is explanation in the foreword by John Merriam as to the origins of the lecture series in 1921, and the subsequent decision to publish the lectures to reach a wider audience.
