This book was donated from the library of Erskine Beveridge and features his bookplate on the inside front board. Through the Earl of Elgin's evidence to the House of Commons Select Committee appointed to examine whether to purchase the Elgin Marbles, great detail is given as to how the Earl acquired his 'collection of sculptured marbles'; in considering whether to purchase the collection of behalf of the public, many figures and costs are also given, in part through reproducing correspondence from the Earl of Elgin. The book ends with 61 beautifully illustrated plates of the sculptures.
