Born of Forth & Tay : a branch of the Horsburgh family in Dundee and Fife

Horsburgh, David, Dr2013
Books, Manuscripts
The Horsburgh family evidently originated in Peeblesshire, or, at least, teh earliest notices of the family are to be found in that region in the 13th century, and it was in Peeblesshire that the Horsburghs of that ilk had their seat. However, the Horsburghs in this present account belong to a branch of the family which first appeared in the burgh of St Andrews, in Fife, during the first half of the 15th century and subsequently spread throughout the east of Fife, Angus and Dundee. In particular, a family of Horsburghs settled in Boarhills (St Andrews parish) where they were variously landowners and tenant farmers between the 16th and 18th centuries and it is from this branch that the present family are almost certainly descended. The period covered in this volume is c.1740-c.1860 and deals with the family in Kilrenny, Anstruther Easter, Dundee, and Glasgow, including material relevant to the families with whom the Horsburghs were intermarried and related.
