A letter dated 2 September 1983 from William Magee, Assistant Director of Administration at Fife Regional Council, to Dunfermline District Council, details a proposal to introduce car parking charges within central Dunfermline, to encourage the use of spaces close to the town centre for short-term parking, with longer-stay parking further out. This is followed by a sheet giving proposed parking periods and fees for parking at New Row, the library, Pilmuir Street, Viewfield Terrace, St Margaret’s Street, Bruce Street, Walmer Drive, Glen Bridge and the forthcoming multi-storey car park in James Street. These locations are shown on a map.
