Henderson’s book examines the use of the Scottish vernacular in prose, ballads and songs but most extensively in poetry. Chapter V, ‘The early Chaucerians, etc.,’ considers the work of, among others, the Dunfermline poet Robert Henryson. Extracts of several of his poems are given, and Henderson rates Henryson as ’at his best as an interpreter of rustic character or animal life’ with a humour ‘delicate but shrewdly wise’.
