This report by the Burgh Surveyor looks at the drainage system in place in Dunfermline, which had been constructed 23 years previously (c1867). The linear measurement of the pipes to the overflow tank on the Hill Farm is given; the diameters of sewage pipes are also listed with very specific location. The inadequacy of the existing system, the work of the Commissioners of Police in laying larger pipe sizes, the improvements required and cost thereof, and the urgency needed to improve drainage at Harrie Brae Mills, are all outlined. The value of this report to local historians lies in its meticulous descriptions of place and work-place (‘ex-Provost Walls’ mill dam’, ‘the new street about to be formed in Castleblair Park’ ‘Messrs Mathewson’s Bleachfield’ ‘Mr Brough’s workshop’ etc.).
