Dunfermline water supply : A short historical note

Millar, Robert T., C. Eng., M.I.C.E., M.I.H.E.1966
Books, Manuscripts
This single-sided typescript ‘historical note’ outlines the history of Dunfermline's water supply from first Council action in 1721 until the 1960s when the note was written. Drought years are mentioned, as these often led to remedial action: the official abandonment of the Town Loch as a source of water supply and the initiation of the first piped water scheme took place in 1764, a year after a drought which saw the Dam, Tower Burn and Lyne Burn dried up between July and October. Water shortages in 1873, 1874 and 1875 led to the water supply being cut off for 42, 37 and 101 nights respectively. The location of the town’s main wells is given. The writer does not provide a bibliography or list information sources.
