These notes are by James Shearer, linen manufacturer and father to James Shearer the architect (who designed the extension to Dunfermline Carnegie Library, Dunfermline Fire Station etc.). The notes chronicle the growing disagreement between Mr Shearer and Rev James B Brown, minister of the Free North Church [later named St John's Parish Church; on Bruce Street, Dunfermline]. Correspondence between the two men is reproduced, including Shearer's resignation as Choirmaster which marked the end of 'an association of 20 years standing'. The notes contain details of Church Courts, missionary activity, the Lawrie Bequest etc.
