An abridged version of “The Life of John Hope” issued to mark the centenary of his birth. This book tells of the life John Hope, a philanthropist and reformer (born in Edinburgh in 1807, died in 1893), and of how he founded a temperance movement for children in Edinburgh in 1847. This was the British League of Juvenile Abstainers and was funded by Mr Hope, a wealthy lawyer. Members had to abstain from alcoholic drinks, tobacco and opium, and study the bible.
