Burntisland burgh election : 1751

Scotland. Court of Session1751
Books, Manuscripts
This is a hardbound copy of two papers relating to the set/sett/constitution of the Burgh of Burntisland. The trades of the burgh had raised an action against the magistrates and Town-council, which come to court under the Lord Elchies Ordinary who “ordered Informations to be given in” – the two papers of the document are these Informations. The tradesmen wanted the Town-council to consist of 21 members including the Provost; and that of these 21, 14 should be merchants/burgesses/Guild-brethren and 7 should represent the 7 trades (Hammermen/smiths, wrights, taylors, cordiners/shoemakers, baxters, websters/weavers and fleshers). The magistrates felt that the Provost, whether nobleman or gentleman, could make up a 22nd member of Town-council; and that a trade should not be represented on the Council if its number fell below three. Both sides back up their argument with reference to past decreets.
