Born in Cupar in 1856, Nicholson studied at St Andrews and was destined for a partnership in a local legal firm. This proving not to be to his taste he abandoned it to study art at Oxford, Paris and Dresden. he exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Albert Institute in Dundee. His style was said to be quiet and subdued colouring which showed considerable promised but he drowned in Cromarty Bay in 1885.
