Control of the medieval and early Scottish burghs was in the hands of a minority of residents known as burgesses. These burgesses were merchants and craftsmen of the burgh, who had the right to elect the Town Council, the merchants being the more influential. Everyone else in the burgh was 'unfree' and had no vote or special privileges from living in the town. Even affluent householders such as writers, chamberlains and lawyers were often 'unfreemen' although many were awarded the status of burgess 'gratis' which conferred citizenship but little else. Respectable widows, might also be awarded this citizenship. This book contains a list from the register of Merchant and Trade Burgesses of old Aberdeen from the years 1605-1885.
