This item comprises the first four pages only of a Petition by John Farquhar, school-master at Culross, dated 28 July 1740. Mr. Farquhar had been schoolmaster at Culross since 1720. In 1723 a petition had been presented to the Presbytery of Dumfermling [Dunfermline] by the ministers of Culross to ensure provision of a 'commodious' house and suitable salary for the schoolmaster. Accounts of meetings are given which refer to heritors such as Brigadier Preston, Lord Blairhall, Col. John Erskine, and Lady Mary Cochran [Cochrane]. There are historical details such as names of previous schoolmasters and heritors, and local records, for example from 1657 that 'the 1000 Merks Bond, which is mortified to the School, should be registrated'.
