This item documents the petitions of the creditors of Archibald Cochrane, 9th Earl of Dundonald. As far back as 1781, Arthur Cuthbert ‘late of Madras in the East Indies’ brought ‘a Process of ranking and sale’ against the Earl for debts of L. 10,000. The Earl had for some time gained his creditors’ agreement to continue running collieries on the property but his debts had risen further. The sequestrated estate was purchased by George Glenny ‘merchant in London’ but an 1804 petition claims that Glenny ‘still owes a considerable part of the price of the lands bought by him’. The documents contain reports on various creditors and sums owed, and affords details on the collieries of Valleyfield (rented from Sir Charles Preston) and Culross as well as on mining methods of the time.
