Culross Burgh election : 1766-1767 / spine title

Court of Session (Scotland)1767
Books, Manuscripts
This item comprises legal papers in a dispute over the Culross council election of 1765, which both sides claimed to have involved bribery and corruption. Robert Geddes and George Law, moreover, claimed that James Spital/Spittal, Trades-counsellor, was abducted to prevent his attendance at the election: 'he was pulled from his horse, his mouth stopped, and himself dragged, with his face downwards, alongst some corn-ridges' to a barn where he was held until after the elction. The council was split between supporters of Robert Haldane of Gleneagles and Captain James Erskine to serve as M.P. and the papers here illustrate this power-struggle.
