This item comprises legal papers concerning the petition of the Deacons of the five Incorporations of Trades (hammermen, weavers, baxters, taylors and shoemakers) of Inverkeithing burgh to have the 'Privilege of being Members of the Town-council as Deacons'. A subsequent Complaint details Deacons being prevented from voting in 1744: 'Hugh Grindiston the eldest Baillie... shaking his Staff, cried out in a menacing Way, if any of the old Deacons endeavoured to come up to the Council, it should be over his Belly'. Sir Robert Henderson of Fordel [Fordell] features, as Provost and as having allegedly brought in 'a dreadful Mob of Colliers' to intimidate the Deacons. Papers include a 1742 handwritten Sett of the Burgh of Inverkeithing.
