This item comprises legal papers dated between 4 June and 11 July 1734, concerning the parliamentary election which took place in Inverkeithing on 18 May. Mr James Erskine of Grange states that he was elected by 3 votes to 2 but that the Clerk of Inverkeithing, John Cant, falsely 'returned the Name of Captain Peter Halket [Halkett] younger of Pitfirran [Pitfirrane]' as the Person duly elected'. Cant argues that he obeyed the rules: Erskine's Commission to vote had been rejected and Mr Henry Cunningham of Balquhan [Boquhan] then held the casting vote, as Delegate for the presiding 'Burrow' of Inverkeithing, resulting in the election of Halket.
