Mercer, Andrew
Books, Manuscripts
Published in 1819 by the Dunfermline printer John Miller, this historical book of poetry by fellow Dunfermline gentleman Andrew Mercer, is divided roughly in half - the first half is poetry, and the second half is written about the background of Dunfermline and surrounding area, historically at this time. It centres on how Malcolm III of Scotland came to be on the throne. Also that the first monks in Dunfermline Priory were Culdees, probably from the ancient Culdee monastery in Old Melrose. A section of the book is also given to the story of David I of Scotland, and Robert Henryson, a Dunfermline poet and schoolmaster, who lived in the reign of James IV, and his role in the Benedictine Convent of Dunfermline. the last page of this book lists chronologically the Royalty of Scotland, from Malcolm III, 1056-1093, to that of James V, 1513-1542.
