Inverkeithing parish v. Robertson : 1792 / spine title

Court of Session (Scotland)1792
Books, Manuscripts
These papers detail an accusation against Andrew Robertson, minister of Inverkeithing parish since 1791. He is claimed to 'have been guilty art and part of the... crime of Simony' (buying or selling of something spiritual or connected with the spiritual): it is alleged that he ensured his selection as minister by promising the vote of his brother, a Bailie in Kinghorn. The appellants are careful not to cast any blame on William Ferguson of Raith for buying this vote by ensuring the selection of Rev. Robertson, stating that Ferguson was 'happening to stand in need of an additional vote in this burgh' and that a political candidate has 'a dispensation to use political means'. Robertson, however, is condemned for 'buy[ing] this cure of souls just as he would purchase any common article'.
