These papers catalogue a dispute over the sale at roup of a vessel called the Betty of Kincardine, bought by the petitioner David Izat from James Murray in 1756. The sale had fallen through, according to Izat due to the seller failing to provide Izat with a Right to the Vessel and also due to 'sundry bottomry debts' etc affecting the vessel. Court actions and decreets had followed, and John Ruthven became involved as allegedly having used the anchor for some years after the roup. Others named in the papers include John Davidson, previous owner of the sloop; Henry Miller, shipmaster in Kincardine; George Primrose, judge of the roup; and Robert Winchester, merchant in Kincardine.
