This item concerns the 'unserviceable state' of the Abbey Church in Dunfermline, due to 'an echo affecting the remotest corner of that building, and perceived very palpably'. Rev. John Tod Brown, since his induction in 1837, had been calling for the Abbey Church to be divided into two places of worship as the only cure for the poor sound quality (at a cost of L.980 and seating 2584 over both churches). Others in Dunfermline Presbytery, however, felt that moving the pulpit would remedy the problem (at a cost of L.150 and reducing seating to 1274). Since no agreement could be reached, the case came before the General Assembly. Details are given of both plans, including a report by Sir John Leslie from 1824.
