This Official Guide to Crail was originally written by the late Reverend John Jackson of Crail and has been revised and re-written in parts by J. Gordon Dow, Town Clerk of Crail. The cover states that it has been published by the authority of the Town Council of the Royal Burgh of Crail. There is no date printed on the title page but there is a pencil inscription 'c 1949'. This is part of a series of editions of this guidebook and there is an earlier (first) version of this book in Cupar Reference Library dated 1896 there are also two other editions in Fife Libraries of 1927 and 1954.. On the date label inside the front page there is a pen inscription 'Copy 4'. This later version of the guidebook includes a fold-out sketch map of Balcomie Golf Course, nine black and white photographs, eleven black and white illustrations and some advertisements for local Crail businesses. Topics covered range from 'Situation-derivation of name' to 'Jacobite Sympathies - Parliamentary Representation' and there is information of antiquarian and contemporary interest.
