This book is the work of the Fife born satirical artist and cartoonist Martin Anderson (1854-1932) pseudonym 'Cynicus'. It was self-published in 1891 when he had a studio in London. It consists of text and images (caricatures) and the images are all hand-coloured by the artist as stated 'The Illustrations are coloured by hand'. The pages are gilt edged. The title page replicates the image from the front cover entitled 'The Celestial Circle'. There is an introductory verse written by the artist with a facsimile of his signature. The images broadly satirise contemporary society and the human condition. The book is cloth bound with decorative end papers with a floral and foliate motif. It is generally in sound condition with some wear to edges of boards and some engrained dirt to pages.
