Society of Gardeners, Dunfermline1716
Books, Manuscripts
Dating from, at least, 16th October 1716. The Society of Gardeners, Dunfermline came in to being, and a set of rules to govern the Society, with two clear objectives: the improvement of the art of gardening, and the support of its own members. At a meeting held by the Society on 30th July 1719, it was 'agreed that the "Money in the Box", should be sent abroad for Garden Seeds'. List of full members from the year 1716, to 1816 are given in this book, and although it was originally designed 'only to extend to the presbytery of Dunfermline, it soon became of such celebrity, that in a very short time, it had taken a much wider range; committees having been appointed for a number of other places, such as Edinburgh, Cupar etc., from which we may conclude, that no such societies had been formed in these places at that time'.
