In 1818 the bones of Robert Bruce were uncovered by workmen at the Dunfermline Church. Michael Penman looks at the reaction, or lack of, to the reburial of the bones and looks at the 19th century historical reputation of Robert Bruce. The article contains interesting historical detail pertinent to the history of Dunfermline.

Michael Penman is a Senior Lecturer in history at the university of Stirling: he is a specialist in medieval Scottish History currently engaged on studies of royal piety in Scotland c.1170-c.1406 and the reign of Robert Bruce.
