The Rev. Andrew Brydie on the detractors of Burns : (from the Scottish American Journal)

Brydie, Andrew, Rev1880
Books, Manuscripts
This is an article which appeared in the Scottish American Journal in 1880, written by the Rev. Andrew Brydie who had previously lived in Dunfermline. Rev. Brydie laments the fact that too much attention has been paid to Burns' life and that he had been portrayed in a bad light by some of his contemporaries - "...by some evil destiny, from the moment Burns drew breath....every incident of that life, alike of glory and of shame, has found its eager chronicler." He argues that the fact that less is known about Shakespeare's life means he is regarded as a "wonderful human being". In the last paragraph, he quotes the "Bard's Epitaph" which he considers to be "a far truer measure of the man.."
