This item marks the inauguration of the College of Hygiene and Physical Training by the Secretary for Scotland on 4 October 1905. The ceremony took place in the Carnegie Gymnasium, with an audience of 1100, and attended by the Trustees, the Provost and Magistrates of Dunfermline, and Scottish educationalists. It was followed by a lunch in the City Chambers for 140 people. This item gives the inauguration speeches and also those toasts at the luncheon which concerned the work and mission of the College. The address by the Chairman of the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust explains how the College evolved from the formation of The Carnegie Gymnastic Club. Others quoted in the book include the Earl of Elgin.
