Existing poor laws were formally abolished with the 1948 National Assistance Act, which followed on from the Family Allowances Act (1945), National Insurance Act (1945) and National Insurance - Industrial Injuries Act (1946) to broaden welfare provision by offering benefits for anybody in need. This leaflet explains how to apply and includes the scale of allowances (eg. 43s. 6d. a week for a married couple - this is the rate that was applicable for 1950-1951).
