Once upon a time in auld Buckhyne

In order to establish the origin of the town of Buckhaven, (locally known as Buckhyne) the author attempted to present a chronological and historical account from the earliest times to the current day, clerifying details of human occupation. Within the Wemyss Caves, located one mile from Buckhyne there is evidence from wall markings authenticating the invasion of the Vikings to the Fife coastline around 800 A.D. In 1907 a number of burial tombs were uncovered in buckhyne, the contents of which confirmed habitation in the area in the times of the earliest Christians in the 1st century. however the most significant discovery occurred in 2002 when several burial coffins were mistakenly uncovered during preparations for a proposed residential development in Leven, a town two miles from Buckhyne. Radiocarbon dating of the skeletal remains confirmed they dated back to the Neolithic Age which occurred between 5,000 and 6,000 years agao. these facts confirmed that the Buckhyne area was indeed inhabited from earliest times.
