The Ringed Castle is the fifth in Dorothy Dunnett's highly popular series of histoical novels. On 10 November 1556 Richard Chancellor's ship 'Edward Bonaventure', four months out from the harbour of St Nicholas on the Frozen Sea and homeward bound for London, was cast away off Pitsligo. Among the few who struggled ashore on the inhospitable Aberdeenshire coast was the Voevoda Bolshoia of Russia, late scourge of the Tartars in the name of his sovereign lord the Tsar Ivan Vasilievich, but no stangerr to Scotland. Francis Crawford of Lymond had come home.
