Willie Lumb spent his adult life in a small village called Marsden, restled against the pennines of West \Yorkshire . Employed as a weaver, he was part of the ongoing industrial expansion in the valley of nineteenth and twentieth-century Britain. At the dawn of 1917, the family man, as 64173 Private Willie Lumb (Machine Gun Corps), now became a cog, in the wheel of the vast industrial machinery of war, which swept through Europe from 1914.
