The Great economic changes in Britain which are commonly described as the 'Industrial Revolution' transformed not only the economy but also the values of British society. Some observers considered industrialization as most advantageous to the nation. Others held that its attendant evils were too great a price to pay for an increase in wealth that was not distributed with a view to improving the general welfare of the community. Foremost among the latter, during the years 1812-20, was Robert Owen (1771-1858), shop boy, manufacturer, factory reformer, educationist, socialist and co-operative pioneer. To his contemporaries Owen was first a successful business man and then a social reformer. Today, however, he is remembered not for his contribution to the success of industrial capitalism but pre-eminently for his critique of it. Dr Butt sketches Owen's career, explains the social and economic background of his work, summerizes the principal elements of his teaching and traces the fortunes and the influence of that teaching down to our own day. With the exception of the life (begun c. 1853), this volume includes all Owen's most important writings,
