English folk embroidery is largely the story of the smock; a most practical as well as beautiful garment, with its interesting construction and rich yet simple surface embroidery. In its traditional form it differs from the peasant embroidery of most other countries in being independent of the use of colour contrasts, but there are of course later developments in which the use of colour plays an enjoyable part.Oenone Cave here traces the history of the garment, as far as it is known, describes in detail the main smocking stitches and surface stitches, and offers numerous suggestions for modern applications of this ancient art (that this is not a forced revival is shown by the lively appearance of a good deal of smocking in the Paris collections for spring 1965). The text is supplemented by a varied range of pictures which include many of the author's own designs, and some practical working charts.
