This publication has been compiled by the author from notes contained in "Memoirs of the Geological Survey of Scotland : The iron ores of Scotland (1920) FIFESHIRE" and supplemented with selected content and maps from Michael Martin's Fife Pits & Memorial Book website as researched by the author and fellow webmasters.Following this introduction, the information on ironstone mining will be presented in three general sections - for West Fife, for Central Fife and for East Fife - and will include relevant sketch maps, abandonment plans and newspaper articles either produced by or researched by the team of Fife Pits 'webmasters'.Fife is less favoured than the Central and Western coalfields as regards the extent and value of its iron-ore deposits. Even when at the height of its development, the Fife iron industry never contributed more than a small fraction of the total Scottish output, quite out of keeping with the size of the mineral-producing area of the county.
