Mining at Wemyss

Sparling, Chris2020
Books, Manuscripts
This is a compilation of historical and newspaper articles which features a brief introductory history of the origins of coal mining in the Wemyss area and then relates to coal mining events at a particular groups of pits of the Wemyss Colliery, Fife. The group of pits looked at in more detail in this publication are the Victoria (Wemyss No. 7) Pit, the Lady 'Emma' Pit, the Hugo Pit, old Lochhead Pit, the Stair Pit, Maw Colliery, the Duncan Pit, the 'new' Lochhead (formerly "Lady Lilian) Pit, the Lochhead (Surface Dipping) Mine and the Earlseat Mines. Information relating to these pits will be included in the order listed but readers will quickly realise that neighbouring pits in a colliery were usually linked very closely for successful coal operations in a coalfield whether this was for the purposes of coal extraction, ventilation or transportation of either men or minerals. Newspaper reports relating to all the aforementioned pits and mine have been incorporated into those relating to the general Wemyss Colliery.
