This bound conference paper which focuses on the concept of ‘The Sabbath’ within a specifically Scottish context, is a reprint of a paper originally given at the meeting of The Evangelical Alliance in Geneva in 1861. The paper was published by request at the time and two years later (1863) it appeared in a new edition with a preface by the then Bishop of Liverpool and was translated into several other languages. In his introduction, dated November 1893, 'J.M. S' (Reverend John Schiach) expresses his wish that this treatise on the Scottish Sabbath will 'balance the judgment of another generation than that to which it was originally addressed'. He also stresses the importance of the Sabbath as a 'subject intimately connected with the best interests of the British churches and the British nation'. The Prefatory Note is by an English clergyman, Reverend J. C.Ryle, formerly the Lord Bishop of Liverpool. The paper itself is divided into nine numbered arguments stressing the vital importance and sanctity of the Sabbath Day in Scotland. A description of the typical activities undertaken on the Sabbath day are provided, such as the reading of books and the visits to the sick culminating in 'family worship, meditation, and secret devotion'. The larger societal implications of the Sabbath in Scotland are also discussed 'There are tens of thousands of our industrial classes...who seldom see the younger members of their families, except on Sabbath day' and references are made to medical and scientific arguments regarding the importance of bodily rest provided on the Sabbath in a 'physiological' sense. Concern is expressed at the perceived erosion of the values of the Sabbath in modern Scottish and particularly English society by competing interests such as 'Picture galleries, crystal palaces, museums of nature and art’ and ‘Sunday excursion trains'.
