This piece of travel writing was written by Archibald Romanes. The author's name is cited with just his initials on the title page 'A.R.' Romanes is both the author and the publisher of the item which originally appeared in the 'Dunfermline Press and Advertiser'. The notes are based on a holiday the author took in the company of friends. In the introductory paragraphs, the author sets out the parameters of the travel notes 'We make no pretentions...to give either a historical, geographical, or minutely descriptive account of the Continental cities which we visited during our few weeks' holiday. All that we aim at doing is, simply, to record what we saw, and the impressions that we formed when journeying, with notebook in hand, from one place to another.' The author commenced his journey by sailing from Leith to Rotterdam on board the ship the 'Kinghorn' and progressed through Holland, Belgium and Germany before ending the journey in Copenhagen from whence he travelled back to Leith via Christiansand in Norway. For the return journey, he sailed on the ocean steamer the 'Navarre'.
